FFW24 - KANI’s Take

Fabric everywhere.

Hours of sewing.

Makeup. Models.

And that’s still barely half of putting together a fashion show.

This is a reflection of KANI’s first presentation at Freeport Fashion Week.

While working on the collection I went through a lot of different concepts from national symbols to formalwear, and a few other directions that didn’t feel right.

Eventually I landed on three little black dresses.

At the time that felt the most like KANI.

I wanted to show how it feels finding yourself in your twenties in a simple and interesting way. The collection shows the growth and complete transformation of a person as they come into their own. I really liked black and red at the time, and still do. The contrast feels simple but powerful.

The first look begins with a small circle.
The second pushes the idea of growth and expansion.
The last look shows the full transformation.

The one thing I like the most about the collection is that dresses don’t have any zippers, buttons, or closures.

I wanted them to feel easy. Sexy. Reversible. Pieces you could just slip on and wear in different ways.

The show itself went by fast. With any show, months of preparation always disappear in a few minutes once the models start walking.

I only wish I had better videos of the models walking.
